Depending upon your genes, you may develop a lop ear deformity which is a protruding ear from the side of the head. It may involve one or both of your ears. In its most severe form, there is no fold on the top part of the ear. This is readily corrected by an otoplasty which forms a fold called the antihelical fold in the ear. The incisions are behind the ear and are not visible. Frequently, these patients also have another problem which is a deep concha bowl that does not allow the ear to sit against the head. At the time of doing an otoplasty to rebuild a natural fold (antihelical fold), one can remove the conchal cartilage and literally set the ear back closer to the skull thereby eliminating the dumbo elephant ear problem.
TORN LOBULES: (Earlobe Repair)
Frequently, patients with pierced ears will develop a torn lobule or a large hole. These lobule repairs are readily done under local anesthesia by rebuilding the lobule. If the hole has become too large and earrings are continually being lost, then a simple procedure is done to reduce the size of the hole and re-pierce the ear.
