Ear Pinning Surgery
EAR PINNING SURGERY PROCEDURE OVERVIEW
Am I a good candidate for Ear Pinning (Otoplasty – O-toe-plast-e)?
Patients who benefit from cosmetic ear surgery include those who may have:
· torn ear lobules or enlarged earring holes
· protruding ear(s) – The most common of all cosmetic ear surgeries
large ear(s)
· to correct certain inherited traits such as an abnormally shaped ear
· missing antihelical fold (the fold in the top of the ear)
· excessively deep concha bowl
· to correct an abnormally shaped ear as a result of trauma
Ear surgery often is recommended for children around the age of 5 or 6, when the ear is fully developed. Correction of a child’s ears prior to entering school can prevent the teasing and taunting from other children that can lead to psychological trauma. There is no age limit on cosmetic surgery of the ear and adults of all ages have elected this procedure for a variety of personal reasons. Damaged ear lobules that can result from the wearing of earrings are a problem for all ages.
Torn Lobules: (Earlobe Repair)
Frequently, patients with pierced ears will develop a torn lobule or the earring hole will become enlarged. Ear lobule repairs are readily done under local anesthesia by rebuilding the lobule. When fully healed the ear can again be pierced and the patient can wear earrings without worry. If the earring hole has become enlarged then a simple procedure is done to reduce the size of the earring hole.
How is an Ear Pinning performed?
Typically an incision is made behind the ear from which the structure of the ear (cartilage) can be modified and reshaped. The incisions when healed will be concealed in the natural creases of the skin and ear.
