EYELID SURGERY PROCEDURE OVERVIEW
Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?
Any one or combination of the following conditions may indicate that you may be considered a good candidate for eyelid surgery:
· Loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids, perhaps impairing vision
· A puffy appearance to the upper eyelids, making the eyes look tired
· Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
· Upper eyelid droopiness
· Bags and dark circles under the eyes
· Excess skin and fine, “crepe paper type” wrinkles of the lower eyelids
· Lower eyelid droopiness
Aesthetic eyelid surgery can usually correct these problems, though other treatments may also need to be considered. Aesthetic eyelid surgery has the effect of making you look more rested, refreshed, alert and more youthful.
UPPER EYELIDS:
Several factors affect the upper eyelid as we age: sun damage, genetics, smoking and alcohol, all contribute to destroy the youthful upper eyelid that flows into the temple. Initially, the upper eyelid may become puffy eliminating the ability to put on eyeliner and in the latter decades of life, the loose skin will hang down over the eye obstructing the peripheral vision. The procedure to correct these conditions is called an upper lid blepharoplasty (blef-a-row-plalst-ee) which is performed through an incision that is hidden within the natural folds of the upper eyelid and extends slightly beyond the outside corner into the laugh lines or other existing creases. Through this incision, excess skin and the fatty tissue which forms bags in the corners of the eyes are removed, restoring a more youthful appearance.
The other upper eyelid condition – PTOSIS (‘tousis)
Ptosis is a drooping or falling of the upper lid as a result of damage or failure of the tendons and/or muscles that control the upper eyelid. A relatively simple procedure to reattach this tendon can be done and if desired the process can be performed at the time as an upper eyelid blepharoplasty thereby opening up the eye and getting a more youthful appearance.
Frequently, patients will have a combined forehead lift and an upper lid blepharoplasty to totally rejuvenate the forehead and upper eyelid area. The forehead lift repositions the eyebrow in a more youthful position while the upper eyelid blepharoplasty removes puffiness and excess skin and restores the transition of the upper eyelid flowing into the temple area.
LOWER EYELID BLEPHAROPLASTY:
A lower eyelid Blepharoplasty removes the puffiness and bags under the eyes that make you look worn and tired. By making an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid, fat, excess skin and muscle can be removed through this hidden incision safely restoring the natural contour of the lower eyelid.
SCLERAL SHOW OF THE LOWER EYELID:
Drooping of the lower eyelid is known as “scleral show”. As the upper eyelid develops ptosis, the lower eyelid can droop as well. If you look closely at older people, the white part of the eye and the lower outer portion of the eyelid will become rounded and drift downward, producing a scleral show. To correct the scleral show and the laxity of the lower eyelid the lower eyelid is repositioned higher, tightening it through a procedure called canthoplasty. A canthoplasty procedure can be performed in conjunction with a lower lid Blepharoplasty.
BOTOX – Treatment for wrinkles around the eyes:
CROW’S FEET:
In the youthful patient, in their mid 30’s and 40’s, the crow’s feet can be easily corrected with BOTOX® Cosmeticinjections. These are injections that last approximately 3 months and reduce the crinkling at the corners of one’s eye. Another solution is to perform a deep chemical peel of the skin thereby tightening it and reducing the crow’s feet.
SMILE LINES:
Sometimes when people are happy and smile, they develop a fold right underneath the lashes of the lower eyelid. This is a contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle that is thickened and can be readily corrected with a tiny amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic. By paralyzing just a few fibers of this muscle, one loses the thickness and creases seen on smiling.
